What is teeth whitening (bleaching)?

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental procedure that uses peroxide-based gels applied to tooth surfaces to remove stains and lighten tooth shade. It can be performed in-office by a dentist or delivered via take-home trays dispensed by a dental professional.

Teeth whitening, also called bleaching, is a cosmetic dental treatment that lightens the natural colour of teeth. The procedure relies on peroxide-based gels, most commonly hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, which are applied directly to tooth surfaces to break down stains and discolouration caused by age, food and drink, or smoking.

Two main approaches exist. In-office bleaching takes place in the dental surgery and typically uses higher peroxide concentrations activated by light or heat, delivering faster results in a single session or a few appointments. Take-home trays are custom-fitted by your dentist and dispensed with lower-concentration gel for use over one to two weeks, allowing gradual lightening at your own pace.

Results vary depending on tooth structure and stain type. Surface stains from external sources respond more readily than intrinsic discolouration within the tooth structure. The procedure is not permanent; teeth naturally darken over time, and lifestyle habits affect how long results last. Sensitivity is a common side effect, particularly with in-office treatments, though most sensitivity subsides shortly after completion.

Teeth whitening is one of the most frequently requested cosmetic dentistry services in Kuala Lumpur practices. A dentist should assess your teeth and gums before treatment to confirm suitability and rule out cavities or other issues that might interfere with the bleaching process.
